Look around any dive boat and you will notice the green-and-yellow markings on the more experienced divers' tanks. No coincidence: nitrox – oxygen-enriched air – is recreational diving's best upgrade. You carry less nitrogen to depth, so you stay down longer, get back in sooner and feel fresher at the end of the day.

On a Hurghada boat day with two or three dives, the benefit is immediate: your second dive can give you 15–20 minutes more bottom time on a reef than air would. On the course you learn how it all works, how to analyse your own tank with an oxygen analyser, how to set your dive computer and what the depth limits are for different mixes.

It is the fastest route to a new certification: the theory takes half a day and no dives are mandatory – but with us, 2 optional nitrox dives are included in the price so you can try it for real straight away. All of it for €180, with the SSI or PADI certification and no hidden costs.

Who is it for?

Any certified diver from age 12, even straight after OWD. Especially recommended if you plan boat days with 2–3 dives or a week-long diving holiday – that is exactly when nitrox pays off most.

Your day, step by step

  1. Day 1 – morning
    Theory and gas analysis

At the center or on the boat: how nitrox works, depth limits, computer settings – then the real thing: you analyse and label your own tank with an oxygen analyser.

  2. Day 1 – daytime
    2 optional nitrox dives

Two reef dives on 32% nitrox around Giftun – experiencing the longer bottom time and the fresher feeling at the end of the day for yourself.

  3. Day 1 – afternoon
    Short exam and certification

A short knowledge check, then your digital nitrox certification is issued the same day – from tomorrow you dive with the green-and-yellow tank.

Requirements

  • Open Water Diver certification (any agency)
  • Minimum age 12
  • Good general health (medical questionnaire)
  • About 2–3 hours of e-learning before or during the course

Safety

The two golden rules of nitrox are respecting the depth limit and analysing your tank before every dive – you practise this on the course until it becomes routine. Every nitrox tank we fill is verified with an analyser.

Highlights

  • Longer bottom time

Less nitrogen = more time on the reef, especially on your second and third dives of the day.

  • The quickest certification

Done in half a day to a day, even without dives – it slots into any diving holiday.

  • The most popular specialty

The number-one add-on course worldwide – €180 with us, 2 nitrox dives included.

Frequently asked questions

Just an Open Water Diver certification from any agency and a minimum age of 12. It is one of the most accessible specialties – many divers take it right after their OWD, on the same holiday.

Half a day to one day. The theory and gas analysis practice alone are enough for the certification, but with us 2 optional nitrox dives are included – combined with a boat day, you are a certified nitrox diver by the evening.

No – that is the most common misconception. Nitrox makes your dives longer and more relaxing, not deeper; because of the higher oxygen content the depth limit is actually shallower (about 33 metres on 32%). That is exactly why the course teaches you to calculate the limit for each mix.

In nitrox, extra oxygen replaces part of the nitrogen, so your body absorbs less nitrogen at the same depth. That means longer no-decompression limits – more time below without deco obligations – and shorter surface intervals before the next dive.

Whichever you prefer: the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox and the PADI Enriched Air Diver are equivalent, both valid to 40% oxygen and accepted worldwide. We offer both at the same price.

If you do not have it yet, the Advanced course (€290) is the logical next step, followed by the Deep (40 m) or Wreck specialty. Your nitrox certification pairs nicely with all of them – and you can request nitrox on our daily dives any time.

The best 180 euros I have spent on diving

I put off nitrox for a long time because it felt like an unnecessary extra – I was wrong. At Small Giftun we could stay down minutes longer than the group diving on air, and the surface intervals were easier too. The theory was clear and our instructor answered every question I had. From now on I will dive nitrox whenever I can.

More time down, less fatigue

I completed the nitrox specialty in a single day alongside my dives, and felt the difference immediately: longer bottom time on the reef, and in the evening I was not as tired as after air dives. We analyzed the tanks ourselves with the analyzer, so it did not remain mere theory. I would make this course mandatory for anyone who dives a lot.
